The Global Innovation through Science and Technology (GIST) Initiative, a partnership led by CRDF Global and the U.S. Department of State, is hosting a lunchtime panel discussion May 13 on global innovation and technology entrepreneurship.
The luncheon will provide an opportunity to hear about successes achieved by entrepreneurs from emerging economies, and speakers who work to enhance entrepreneurial communities around the globe. Through an interactive platform, participants will learn about innovation and how diaspora groups to create new opportunities.

Abigail Hopper
What: Abigail R. Hopper, chief energy advisor to Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley and acting director of the Maryland Energy Administration, will deliver a presentation to Michael Curley’s “Worldwide Energy Challenges” class. Curley is visiting assistant professor of strategic management and public policy.
When: 4:30 p.m., April 15.
Hopper will discuss how Maryland is moving from fossil fuels to renewables and will elaborate on the U.S. government’s efforts to do likewise. She will discuss the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI), which is a carbon cap-and-trade program that Maryland and 8 other mid-Atlantic and northeastern states operate, and will speak to the state’s offshore wind project, projected to produce 500 megawatts of power from windmills in the Atlantic Ocean.

GWSB’s graduate programs is hosting a webinar series on the first Sunday of every month from 8:00 to 9:30 p.m.
The webinars will feature a guest speaker for the first hour and a student or other speaker for the final 30 minutes. Here is the schedule:
- MAY 5: “Social Entrepreneurship” with Scott Rechler, MBA, ’12, director and CEO of LearnServe International, a non-profit organization that prepares high school and middle school students to be leaders in their communities. Rechler graduated from Harvard College with a BA in social anthropology and is co-founder of Harvard’s Race, Culture, and Diversity Initiative to improve campus inter-cultural relations. He was a 2009 winner of the Linowes Leadership Award of the Community Foundation of the National Capital Region. To register, go here.
- JUNE 2: Secrets of Silicon Valley: What Everyone Else Can Learn from the Innovation Capital of the World – a book discussion with Deborah Perry Piscione, best-selling author. Join GW alumni, students, faculty and staff for the 14th Annual Robert P. Maxon Lecture. This year’s lecture will be delivered by Washington and Northern Virginia Business leader Hossein Fateh, BBA, ’90; MS, ‘97.
Fateh is co-founder, president, CEO and director of DuPont Fabros Technology, Inc., a Washington, D.C.-based owner, developer, operator and manager of wholesale data centers and a real estate investment trust (REIT). In 2007, Fateh successfully led the company through its initial public offering, resulting in net proceeds of approximately $678 million.
The Maxon lectureship was established through Dorothy Maxon’s endowment gift to GWSB in honor of her husband, Robert P. Maxon, BA, ’48. Maxon served his country in WWII and went on to serve in several executive positions for Mobil, retiring as general manager of worldwide corporate public relations.
The annual lecture features prominent executives and academics making presentations on contemporary global management issues.

He has also authored, co-authored, and edited numerous books, articles, and reports on Chinese economic reform, leadership, and corporate social responsibility.

What: The next program in GWSB’s Institute for Corporate Responsibility’s (ICR) Challenges in Corporate Governance series will focus on the role of corporate directors in establishing a corporate culture – or “tone at the top” — that permeates their companies. The concept, while not new, became particularly important for boards after the accounting scandals in the early part of the decade and the 2008 financial crisis. The series is co-sponsored by ICR and the Center for Law, Economics, and Finance (C-LEAF) at GW Law.
