Howard B. Rubin, BBA, `81, vice chair of GWSB’s Board of Advisors, has been named to the Board of Trustees of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston. The trustees serve as advisors to the hospital’s board of directors and officers.
Rubin is chief operating officer (COO) and chief financial officer (CFO) of Midwood Capital Management LLC, where he is responsible for the non-investment activities of the investment manager, including fund accounting, client service and marketing, and compliance.
Rubin previously was a managing member and COO of Tara Hill Capital Management LP, a Boston-based long-short equity hedge fund firm he helped form in 2009. Prior to that, he was senior managing partner of Boldwater Capital Management, a $300 million long-short hedge fund organization based in Boston. He had previously spent 17 years at Standish, Ayer & Wood Inc., now Standish Mellon Asset Management, including in roles as director and executive committee member.

Keith Shovlin, MBA, ’11, published his second book, the novella Life’s Penance, on November 27, 2012. Life’s Penance is the first novella of the Millennial Row series, a collection of 10 stories about life in the 21st Century. The second novella, Andy 4 President, is slated for release this year.

Matt Braynard, BBA, ’00, has published his first collection of literary fiction, Shorter Stories. The book features 26 works in a variety of settings, from overseas to downtown Manhattan to Bangkok to a small room in a hospice. The book is available in hard copy from Amazon.com and from most other retailers, and is also available for Kindle. It will be available for other electronic readers in the coming weeks. Emily Barr
Emily Barr, MBA, ’86, has been appointed to the National Association of Broadcasters’ TV board of directors. The NAB is the industry group representing commercial radio and television stations in the United States. Barr, president and CEO of Post-Newsweek Stations, the TV broadcasting arm of The Washington Post Co., will fill the ABC Affiliate seat on the board. Barr previously was president and general manager of ABC-owned WLS-TV in Chicago.

Capt. Michael Weiner, MSIST, `08, has been named one of the “Top 50 Federal Leaders in IT (information technology) of 2012″ by FedScoop.
Weiner is the chief medical information officer for the U.S. Department of Defense.
The leaders were honored at the first-annual FedScoop 50 Awards ceremony held at the Hay Adams Hotel in Washington, D.C., and attended by more than 150 government and private sector leaders from the White House and the U.S. Department of Defense, among other institutions and agencies.
The awardees were nominated by their peers in government and voted on by FedScoop’s readers. More than 8,000 votes were cast for winners in categories that included federal executives, federal leaders, industry leaders, federal IT programs, federal innovations, mentors and up-and-comers. Daniel Serota, BBA, ’86, has been sworn in as the 14th Mayor of the Incorporated Village of Brookville in Nassau County, New York. Serota is a member of the Real Estate and Finance Alliance Board of Directors and is also a current GW parent.

Brian Stygar, MSIST, `06, an expert in border security technologies, has been named the 2012 Government Contractor Chief Technology Officer (CTO) Innovator of the Year by the Northern Virginia Technology Council (NVTC) and Washington Technology Magazine.
The award recognizes CTOs for “critical contributions to achieving results for their customers and their leadership within their own companies.”
The NVTC, the membership and trade association for the technology community in Northern Virginia, is the largest technology council in the nation, serving about 1,000 companies and service providers, universities, foreign embassies, nonprofits and governmental agencies.
Stygar is CTO for Kore Federal, a leading provider of information technology solutions and management consulting services to the federal government.
He is managing Kore’s efforts to design and implement cloud computing, enterprise mobility, advanced analytics and automated risk assessment solutions for its border security, intelligence and defense customers. He has participated in delegations to aid U.S.-allied immigration and customs agencies in ten countries across five continents to improve the use of technology to identify criminal and terrorist activity.
Stygar said Kore was fortunate to work with federal customers who value innovative information technology solutions and have the means to implement them. He said his award reflected “the value of Kore Federal to its customers.”

Sandra Robinson, MSPM, `05, is interim director of the D.C. Health Benefit Exchange Authority. The authority is trying to merge the District’s individual and small group markets and to require all small businesses within its boundaries to buy health coverage through a District-run health insurance exchange.
The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010 (PPACA) calls for state and federal agencies to make the services of health insurance exchanges, or Web-based health insurance supermarkets, available to all U.S. consumers by Jan. 1, 2014.
Robinson is now the chief operating officer at the district’s health department.

J.R. Claeys, MPA, ’04, is running for a seat in the Kansas House of Representatives. Claeys, a Republican, is running against Democrat Gary Swartzendruber to represent the 69th District, which includes west, southwest and south Salina. The incumbent, Rep. Tom Arpke, is running for state senate.

Jim Cooper, BS, `76; MBA, ’79, is running for a seat on the Ramona Community Planning Group in Ramona, Calif. Cooper is an independent candidate for the locally elected seat.
The group is an elected advisory body to San Diego County that meets monthly to consider land development, road improvement, environmental issues, signage, transportation and trails, and other similar issues.
