“The Arts” will explore modern civic leadership through the lens of special guest Michael Kaiser, president of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Called “the turnaround king,” Kaiser has led numerous artistic and cultural organizations, including the American Ballet Theater, the Royal Opera House, and the Alvin Ailey Dance Theater, out of stagnation and even financial crisis. Over his 12-year tenure at the Kennedy Center, he has transformed the institution from a regional arts center to a national treasure of the performing arts.

Hosted by Dean Doug Guthrie, the event will explore the role of creative leaders in bringing together government, the private sector, and academic institutions to solve society’s most intractable problems.

“Go global” may be the rallying cry for international business, but it has yet to fully penetrate academia. Universities can produce lists of exchange programs they have forged with academic institutions around the world, but these are not deep relationships. Going global has been more academic tourism than a powerful commitment to creating a global academic village.

Today the mere mention of academic globalization, beyond exchange and study abroad programs, sends some university administrators and faculty running for cover. Around the globe, institutions of higher education are wary of internationalizing their campuses and programs for fear of losing control over quality and academic freedom. These are legitimate concerns, especially when trying to operate in a country that is far from your home campus and embodies a culture that may conflict with your own.

Yet the same virtuous cycle that exists in the global marketplace can be adapted to serve the academic community.

The George Washington University School of Business (GWSB), in partnership with the International Women’s Forum (IWF), is proud to launch On the Board, the first of its kind, globally focused, comprehensive training and placement program for the world’s top female executives.

On the Board is an elite fellowship program designed to prepare and place women leaders on corporate boards. Made possible through a generous gift from Linda Rabbitt, founder and CEO of Rand Construction Corporation, GW Trustee and IWF member, On the Board promises to reshape the business landscape by building a pipeline of women prepared to serve on the boards of leading international companies.

Representing a powerful cohort of high-potential 21st-century leadership, On the Board formally announced this history-making program with an event and forum featuring a wide range of speakers and panelists from Fortune 500 corporate boards, global stock exchanges, and the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.

The event introduced to the world On the Board’s inaugural class of 15 fellows, a select group of women executives chosen on the basis of their leadership achievements and potential to serve as effective corporate directors.

Like lemmings, too many American colleges are mindlessly rushing out to find a way to deliver online education, and more and more often they are choosing Coursera. The company, founded this year by two Stanford University computer scientists, has already enrolled more than two million students, has engaged 33 academic institutions as partners, and is offering more than 200 free massive open online courses, or MOOC’s. Read More

GWSB kicked off Conversations on Creative Leadership with a focus on “The Arts” with special guest, Marin Alsop, conductor and music director of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra (BSO). Maestra Alsop discussed her role as leader of the BSO, becoming a “first woman” in a male-dominated profession and how leading an orchestra serves as a metaphor for leading society. Dean Guthrie later engaged her in a spirited conversation on how she encourages innovation and creative thinking within her organization. Click here to see a full Flickr slideshow of the event.

While speaking to the American Institute of CPAs, Dean Guthrie discussed the problems facing higher education. American Universities have long been considered global leaders in the realm of higher education.
Bloomberg Businessweek ran the following article: June 15 (Bloomberg) –

One of the hallmarks of Vincent Gray’s mayoral campaign in 2010 was a promise to create a five-year economic development strategy for Washington, D.C., a plan he took action on shortly after he took office in January 2011. First he reached out to a prominent multinational consulting firm for help in crafting the plan, but they quoted the mayor’s office a figure exceeding $1 million dollars, says David Zipper, director of business development and strategy at the deputy mayor’s office for planning and economic development. Says Zipper: “It was much more than the city could afford at a time when we were facing a budget deficit.”

The city went back to the drawing board and soon found a more creative and cost-effective way of getting help: utilizing the resources of four local business schools in the D.C. area. The mayor’s office was able to set up a partnership with George Washington University’s School of Business, Georgetown University’s McDonough School of Business, Howard University’s School of Business, and American University’s Kogod School of Business.

The George Washington School of Business (GWSB) joined with D.C. Mayor Vincent C. Gray and other area business schools Wednesday, June 6 to kick off a project to develop a five-year economic development strategy for the District.

Using information gained from local business leaders, students from GWSB, Georgetown University, Howard University, and American University will develop a road map for the District’s economic-development efforts, particularly in the areas of business development and job creation.

Gray said the students and business leaders “will help us survey our industry sector leaders and identify opportunities for the public sector and private sector—working in tandem—to catalyze economic development and generate jobs.”

Dean Doug Guthrie, who is leading the academic team, called the public-private partnership an unparalleled opportunity to work collaboratively with the District. “What we really need to be doing is coming together and working on the problems we face,” said Guthrie. “We all believe there are so many ways our institutions can help the city, and we’re committed to doing so now and in the future.”

Dean Guthrie gave introductory remarks on Monday, April 23, for The Growth Dialogue and their China Colloquium. Growth in China during this decade and beyond will hinge in large part on reform measures that assure steady gain in productivity and a rebalancing of demand away from exports and investment and towards domestic consumption. What such reforms are likely to entail and their implications for China’s performance was the focus of the lead speaker’s presentation at this Third China Colloquium. The discussion featured Professor Dwight H. Perkins, the Harold Hitchings Burbank Research Professor of Political Economy at Harvard University.

Over the past weekend, the Chinese government announced that it was loosening up control over its currency. It now allows the Yuan to float within 1 percent, up or down, from the benchmark exchange rate against the U.S. dollar. This is another measured step down the path which eventually leads to a freely floating exchange rate. Dean Guthrie, interviewed on PBS’ Nightly Business Report, emphasizes the incremental and planned nature of change that characterizes most of Chinese economic policy.
