How to start a tech company? Last week, GWSB hosted a “boot camp” designed to help answer that question for military service members and veterans.
“TechStars 2013 Patriot Boot Camp” was an intense three-day program aimed at educating and mentoring veterans and service members on the creation of technology start-ups.
The program was put on by “TechStars Rising Stars,” a entrepreneurial mentoring program that seeks to extend technology company startup opportunities to demographic groups that are currently underrepresented.
It included presentations by technology industry GWSB alumni, leaders and entrepreneurs. One-on-one mentoring took place in concert with lessons on how to build a tech startup and related issues such as accessing resources in the startup community.
Speakers included U.S. Chief Technology Officer Todd Park from the White House; U.S. Sen. Tim Kaine, (D-Va.); and U.S. Rep. Jared Polis (D-Colo.)
Other presentations were given by Gen. George Casey, Jr., USA (ret.); Vice Admiral Mel Williams, USN (ret.), GW’s senior associate dean for military and veterans initiatives; and Steve Blank, the Silicon Valley entrepreneur and academician who enlisted and served four years in the U.S. Air Force.
