On The Board is sponsored by GWSB and the International Women’s Forum (IWF) and will formally kick off in February 2013 with the arrival of the first fellows on the Foggy Bottom campus. The program is funded through a gift from Linda Rabbitt, founder and CEO of Rand Construction Corporation, GW trustee and IWF member.
The 15 women picked for the first class, from a large applicant pool, are executives who work in a wide range of fields, from women’s organizations, to investment banking, to accountancy.
The program is being launched at a critical time, when more than 1,000 corporate directors are men older than 70 who are heading for retirement. Meanwhile, for the last decade, women’s representation on boards has stalled at 16 percent.
“By changing business at the very top level, and pulling it into the 21st century, we will also affect change in the larger business environment and society overall,” said Dean Doug Guthrie.
On The Board is structured as three residences in Washington, D.C., in February, July and November. While the fellows are in town, they will participate in training, development and coaching in such areas as corporate strategy, crisis management, ethical and responsible decision-making, corporate finance, leadership communications and regulatory compliance, and attend networking events.
