Where Did Summer Go? GWSB Gets Ready for Students’ Return

Dean Doug Guthrie welcomes students to GWSB for the 2012 fall term.

GWSB is preparing for the return of graduate and undergraduate students as the fall 2012 term gets underway later this month.  Classes for most students begin Tuesday, Aug. 28.

Some orientation activities have already begun, and plans for others are underway.

For new, full-time MBA students, the School’s  “MBA Institute” is a two-week orientation designed to prepare them for the program. It kicked off with a brunch for students and alumni on August 12, and includes a Global MBA case competition that will run from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Aug. 23.

The goal of the case competition is to give MBA students an opportunity during orientation to compete and strategize with support from judges, including alumni. The judges will assess their presentations, ask questions and provide feedback.  Each three-member judging team will assess three cases.

There are more than 365 incoming MBA students this fall, and the new Global MBA class is among the School’s most diverse ever. (The Global MBA is the School’s main MBA program.)

Over one-third of the class is comprised of non-U.S. citizens from 18 countries who speak 33 different languages. Women make up 43 percent of the class, whose ranks include lawyers, a professional dancer, a scuba diver, a cellist, a talk-show host and accomplished athletes from a wide range of sports, including marathon running, soccer, swimming and equestrian events.

For undergraduates, GWSB has a special week of orientation programs scheduled for the week of Sept. 10 – after students have already gone through their University-wide orientation.

The School’s undergraduate orientation week will culminate in the GW Undergraduate Business Association’s  (UBA’s) “Back 2 Business.” UBA is an umbrella organization that unites all undergraduate student business organizations and fosters collaboration between GWSB and student groups.

During that event, student organizations and University offices set up information tables in Kogan Plaza so students can find out about upcoming events and opportunities to get involved.
