Some Tennis with Will & Kate

On Thursday, several members of the group went to Wimbledon to catch the day’s tennis matches.  What a menu of matches we were treated to.  Match 1 featured the #1 woman in the world, Azarenka.  Match 2 pitted Novak Djokovic against Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.  Only to be topped by Match 3, Roger Federer vs. an American, John Isner.

Wimbledon is an amazing facility, truly tennis’s holy cathedral.  As a child, I grew up watching many Wimbledon matches and grew to love it because the timing coincided with the start of our summer vacation.  All the lore of Wimbledon springs to mind images of Pete Sampras, the Queen in the Royal Box, Steffi Graf, and Strawberries & Cream.  The reality did not disappoint compared to my imagination. The grass at Centre Court was immaculate and the crowd during points was as quiet as a library.  Centre Court only holds 11,000 people which is far smaller than how it’s pictured with wide-angle lenses on tv.  Every seat feels like you’re right on top of the court involved in every point.

The greatest applause came when Will and Kate prepared to leave midway through match 2.   But at least we got to say we saw some royalty on the trip!
