Capping a momentous week on the diamond, which saw Derek Jeter’s historic 3,000th hit, Prince Fielder’s titanic All-Star game home run and the continued improvement of the hometown Washington Nationals (no, really!), the School of Business softball team opened its 2011 season on July 13. Unfortunately, the GWSB squad, “Mind Your Own Business,” came up short on the scoreboard, dropping a 3-1 decision to the deceptively named “Zero Athletic Ability,” representing the GW Athletic Department.
Shortstop Michael Battaglia, International Council for Small Business (ICSB) operations manager, provided stellar defense and accounted for the team’s only run with an inside-the-park homer. Other standouts included: first baseman/pitcher Stuart Levy, assistant professor of tourism and hospitality management; outfielder/pitcher Jorge Rivera, associate professor of strategic management & public policy; outfielder Ayman El Tarabishy, research professor of management and ICSB director; and third baseman Scheherazade Rehman, professor of international finance/business, professor of international affairs and European Union Research Center director. Catcher Meredith Hulley, executive assistant, Master of Science in Finance program, and second baseman Ryan Cassidy, executive assistant, Undergraduate Advising Center, also turned in solid performances.
The team bounced back from the opening day loss with a convincing 9-3 victory over “GW House Party.” The one-and-one start has co-captains Alexis Gaul, administrative director for the GW Center for International Business Education and Research, and Erica Prakop, executive aide in the Office of Graduate Programs, very excited about the team’s prospects for a successful 2011 season.
