Career Center Helps Marketing Students Gain Interview Experience

GWSB juniors and seniors concentrating in marketing got some real-world interviewing experience this January during the F. David Fowler Career Center (FDFCC)’s first “Mock Interview Program” in New York City.

The NYC Mock Interview Program was designed by Brooke Fina, an FDFCC employer development consultant based in New York City, to capitalize on the many corporate relationships the team has been building with marketing and public relations companies located in New York. Working with the career coaches in the FDFCC, the team was able to match students and employers.

Interviews were scheduled during the week of January 3rd, when students were on winter break, making it ideal timing for those who live in or near New York City. The program focused on marketing and communications roles at marketing, public relations and media-oriented companies to continue the Career Center’s work building relationships with marketing employers, in addition to the traditional finance and consulting arenas. Five leading companies worked with the Career Center team to deliver the mock interviews: the Associated Press, NBC, Ruder Finn, Chandler Chicco and L’Oreal.

After reviewing dozens of resume submissions, 15 students were selected to participate in the program, and were matched with one of their company choices. A recruiter for the firm or an employee who is also a GWSB alumnus from each company provided 30-minute mock interviews to the GWSB students to help them practice their interviewing skills. Students then received a personal performance review to assist in developing better interviewing skills.

“I had such a wonderful and positive experience, and I and know this would not have been possible without your efforts. (The recruiters) were very helpful and informative. They certainly were a great representation of (the company) and the industry,” one student said of the program.

Employers who participated commented that they were impressed with the students and encouraged them to apply for opportunities at the interviewing companies.

The FDFCC currently has several on-campus recruiting and networking events in 2011. These events include:
