GWSB has named Murat Tarimcilar as Vice Dean of Programs and Education, and Sok-Hyon Kang as Vice Dean of Faculty and Research. Tarimcilar is currently the Associate Dean for Graduate Programs. Kang is a professor of accountancy.
As Vice Dean of Programs and Education, Tarimcilar will oversee the School of Business’ educational mission. Tarimcilar was named Associate Dean for Graduate Programs in March 2007. He is a professor of decision sciences and has been a faculty member at The George Washington University School of Business since 1999. Prior to assuming his role as Graduate Programs Dean, he held the position of Chair of the Decision Sciences Department.
“Murat Tarimcilar has the entrepreneurial spirit and passion necessary to drive our educational mission and develop cutting-edge programs that provide students with exceptional leadership skills, real-world experiences and rigorous classroom learning,” said Dean Doug Guthrie, professor of international business and professor of management.
Tarimcilar’s areas of expertise include multi-criteria decision models, applications of operations research methods in different business settings, Bayesian decision analysis and production rate optimization. His research has been published in a wide spectrum of policy and business journals such as Management Science, Decision Sciences, OR Letters, Socio-economic Planning Journal, Annals of Regional Science, Journal of Real Estate Finance and Economics and The Financial Review. He holds an editorial position with INFORMS Transactions on Education. He earned his PhD in Business Administration and Quantitative Business Analysis, and an MS in Quantitative Analysis/Operations Research from Louisiana State University, as well as a BS in Industrial Engineering from Bogazici University in Turkey.
As Vice Dean for Faculty and Research, Sok-Hyon Kang will guide GWSB’s mission to integrate and provide leadership for faculty development, research and doctoral programs, as well as coordinate the various centers, institutes and programs within GWSB. He is a professor of accounting in the Department of Accountancy. He earned his PhD from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Sloan School of Management, where he won the Zenon and Clotilde Zannetos Best Thesis Award. He received his MBA from the Anderson School of Management at UCLA, where he was an Edward W. Carter Fellow and his BS Me from Seoul National University.
“Research and thought leadership are critical to being a top academic institution. At the GW School of Business, our research is transforming policy and providing business leaders with the information they need to lead in the global economy,” Guthrie said. “Sok-Hyon Kang’s reputation among faculty and students make him an excellent steward of the school’s vision and its standards of excellence for research, faculty and doctoral programs.”
Kang is an expert in financial analysis and financial reporting, and his areas of research include financial reporting, earnings management, executive compensation and security markets. He is an accomplished author, with publications in premier journals of accounting and management, including The Accounting Review, Journal of Accounting Research, Journal of Accounting and Economics, Review of Accounting Studies, Management Science and Journal of Business. He has served on the editorial board of The Accounting Review. At GWSB, he teaches financial statement analysis, which is one of the most popular courses among graduate students.
Both Dean Tarimcilar and Dean Kang will report to Dean Doug Guthrie.
