Edward Knight, executive vice president and general counsel of The NASDAQ OMX Group, shared his insight on financial reform legislation in the public markets during an Oct. 13 event hosted by the EMBA Alumni Association as a part of their Lifelong Learning Event series.
During his talk, “Financial Reform: Exchanges, Policy Makers and the World Economy,” Knight spoke about the importance of establishing regulations in the over-the-counter derivatives market.
“Lack of reform is at the heart of what caused the financial crisis. We were within weeks of complete economic collapse,” said Knight. “The status quo is not an option.”
Knight’s presentation stressed the need for transparency and a clearinghouse to strengthen the over-the-counter derivatives market and prevent future panic. Following his talk, Knight fielded questions from the audience regarding the current economic climate.
