Robert Savickas, associate professor of finance, and Jorge Rivera, associate professor of strategic management and public policy, were recently honored with the Peter Vaill award for their spirit of dedication to GWSB doctoral students. The award was established in honor of Peter Vaill, a former GWSB professor who was celebrated for his commitment to assisting doctoral students.
“He was known for going above and beyond his normal professor duties to help doctoral students advance toward earning their doctoral degrees. It is in his honor that this award is presented to a professor or professors who exemplify Dr. Vaill’s renowned support,” said Mary Schoonmaker, GWSB Ph.D. candidate.
Each doctoral student could submit one professor’s name for nomination. A total of 16 professors were nominated for the award. This year’s vote resulted in the first ever tie.
Savickas consistently demonstrates his commitment to doctoral students by holding a math camp prep course in the summer for new doctoral students to re-familiarize them with calculus and advanced algebra, according to the students. He also holds doctoral seminars, helps with research, and serves on many dissertation proposal committees. Rivera exhibits a similar passion for helping doctoral students. He holds doctoral seminars and assists with thesis research as well as thesis proposals and defense. He also has a history of facilitating staff and student cooperation in times of need, Schoonmaker said.
The professors were awarded their plaques of recognition at the Sept. 24 faculty meeting.
